Background

Google has expanded the reach of its Gemini AI by integrating it into the Chrome browser for all users in the United States. The company announced on Thursday that Gemini will now be available on both Mac and Windows computers as well as on mobile devices.

With Gemini built into Chrome, the user can request assistance in comprehending websites, work on a range of tabs, or even perform tasks in one tab, like scheduling a meeting or searching YouTube. The AI assistant will also connect more deeply with Google apps like Calendar, Maps, and YouTube, making it easier to use these services without leaving the browser.

Rick Osterloh, Google’s senior vice president of platforms and devices, said the update aims to make browsing smarter while keeping Chrome’s “speed, simplicity, and safety.”

The rollout comes at a time when internet browsers are becoming a key battleground in the AI race. OpenAI, Anthropic, and Perplexity have all introduced AI-powered browsers or agents in recent months. OpenAI is reportedly working on its own Chromium-based browser, while Perplexity launched its Comet browser in July.

Google is also introducing agentic features to Gemini in Chrome. These features, tested internally as Project Mariner, will allow users to book services like haircuts or place grocery orders directly through the browser. Enterprise users of Google Workspace will soon gain access to Gemini with enhanced data protection.
