  • CarKey is now compatible with cars from Tata, Hyundai, BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Volvo, Polestar, Kia, RAM, and more.
  • Features include remote unlock, remote access, Express Mode, and secure key sharing using AirDrop and messaging apps.
  • The feature provides increased convenience and security via NFC and Ultra-Wideband technology integration.

Key Background

Apple originally released the CarKey feature in 2020, enabling users to unlock and drive compatible vehicles with their iPhones or Apple Watches. Originally applied to a limited number of BMW models, the technology had been based on NFC (Near Field Communication), where the users would need to tap their device close to the car handle in order to access it. Later, Apple upgraded the system by using Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology, permitting passive entry—enabling users to unlock their cars merely by drawing close to them with the phone in their pocket.

With each successive iOS release, Apple extended CarKey support. Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, and Mercedes-Benz were a few of the initial adopters following BMW. These models included support for CarKey and highlighted advanced features like remote access and secure key sharing.

And now, with iOS 26, Apple has expanded its largest CarKey expansion to date. The feature has been complemented with support for Tata Motors vehicles, opening the door into the Indian automotive market. Some of the other brands included are Audi, Volvo, Polestar, RAM, Rivian, Lotus, MINI, and several others. Most of these new models have both NFC and UWB support, enabling further features like:

  • Passive entry and start: Open and start your car without removing your phone.
  • Remote functions: Lock/unlock and trigger horn or trunk through Bluetooth.
  • Express Mode: Quick access without the need for Face ID or passcode.
  • Key sharing: Simply send digital car keys to others through AirDrop, Mail, Messages, or WhatsApp.

Apple’s addition of Tata Motors is an indication of its intent to bring digital car access to more of the world, outside of high-end car makers. By coupling with even more mass-market and rising-market automobiles, Apple is bringing digital keys to more people and making them more convenient.

With the development of vehicle technology, Apple’s continuous collaborations with automakers and industry groups indicate that CarKey will soon be an integral feature of most future car models. The iOS 26 update is a key move in that direction, providing the users with a smooth, secure, and up-to-date way to engage with their vehicles.
