Background
WhatsApp has introduced a new artificial intelligence application, referred to as Writing Help, which lets the user edit, rewrite, and enhance the tone of the messages one intends to forward. The tool aims at making conversations easily understandable, professional, or even funny, depending on the option of user.
The new feature can correct grammar, suggest better phrasing, and provide tone-based rewrites. WhatsApp gave an example of this with a message that said: Please do not leave dirty socks on the sofa. The AI provided funny options like Breaking news: Socks found chilling on the couch and Please, do not turn the couch into a sock graveyard.
According to WhatsApp, privacy remains a top priority. The tool uses the Meta Private Processing technology, which guarantees that original messages or AI-generated suggestions are not read by WhatsApp or by Meta itself. The request is also sent via an encrypted, anonymous line that cannot be traced back to the user.
To use Writing Help, users can tap on a small pencil icon that appears while typing a message. This icon replaces the sticker option once a few words are entered. By selecting it, users can receive instant AI-generated alternatives to their draft text.
The company clarified that Writing Help is not enabled by default. It is only applicable to the particular message that a user wants and not a full conversation. Importantly, the feature will not send AI-generated text automatically; users must approve the suggestion before sharing it.
Through this launch, WhatsApp is hoping to retain users within the WhatsApp platform to support intensive writing, instead of making use of external services such as ChatGPT. The feature will simplify everyday communication and still preserve user privacy and control.
