Key Background :
In May 2025, Google released a major batch of updates across Wallet, Wear OS, Google Play, and Android 16, with a heavy emphasis on personalization, real-time access, and device security.
Google Wallet introduced the support of digital IDs in additional U.S. states such as Arkansas, Montana, Puerto Rico, and West Virginia. A new function named “Nearby Passes” warns users when a saved pass is applicable to their vicinity, e.g., a boarding pass close to an airport. Passes can now be sent automatically by airlines to users upon check-in. UK passports are now supported by the digital ID system as well.
Wear OS will also introduce Live Activities, like Android’s real-time app updates, to give users timely information such as ride status or delivery updates right on their watch faces.
Google Play has rolled out its “Request Purchase” option, once reserved for India, to regions such as the U.S., Japan, Mexico, and Indonesia. One user can request another user to pay for apps or subscriptions using this feature. Developers also receive enhanced tools, including more control over app rollouts to prevent bugs, simplified bundling of subscriptions, and more dynamic content carousels on app lists.
Android 16, beta this time, introduces a visual update with the more expressive Material 3 language that touches the launcher, lock screen, quick settings, and more. One of the highlights is the new Linux Terminal, where users can run full GNU applications within a virtual environment, a significant step for Android’s move towards more desktop-like behavior.
Finally, Pixel smartphones are also getting vital security patches, resolving microphone and Bluetooth bugs and squashing a critical zero-day flaw. A bootloader update now stops devices from falling back to vulnerable firmware versions, enhancing device security over the long term.
